It’s cold and frosty again and I’m way behind with all garden work. So I’m going back to 1st May 2011, when I was able to post
this.

Suddenly, the Christmas decorations look a little silly. I spent much of the morning gardening and before I came in, picked a spray of roses.

Happy New Year, everyone.

Ring out, wild bells, to the wild sky,
The flying cloud, the frosty light;
The year is dying in the night;
Ring out, wild bells, and let him die.

Ring out the old, ring in the new,
Ring, happy bells, across the snow:
The year is going, let him go;
Ring out the false, ring in the true.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * *
Ring in the valiant man and free,
The larger heart, the kindlier hand;
Ring out the darkness of the land,
Ring in the Christ that is to be.

With deer in the garden nearly every day, I understand why previous residents didn't plant roses here. Roses are just about their favourite nosh. The creatures seem to leave this wall rose alone, though. I think it's 'Buff Beauty' and I can't seem to get a good photograph of it. Very pretty mixed up with the clematis and honeysuckle.

roses and philadelphus are flowering together like this.

The rose is one the French call 'Cuisse de Nymphe Emue' but as Vita Sackville-West wrote, the English have no truck with the thighs of nymphs, so we call it 'Maiden's Blush'. The great advantage of this old alba rose is that it flowers in shade, as does 'Queen of Denmark'; if you think your garden is too shady for roses, think again.

This corner of the garden is heavy with scent at the moment as there's also a rambling rose, the notorious 'Kiftsgate', nearby and a mass of honeysuckle. The philadelphus is called 'Beauclerk'. When I decided to plant one there I picked this because I'd seen it in a garden open to the public and loved that purple stain at the centre of the flower. And, of course, the smell.

In other news, I went in fear and trembling to see my dentist today but he could find no cause for my nagging tooth. Even though it still hurts and I have to have scaling done in case it's caused by gum problems, this news made me feel so lighthearted that I bought these shoes.

Half price in Clarks' sale. Highly appropriate for my current lifestyle, as I'm practically living on strawberries, which are the same colour.

Oh deer

The other evening I was sitting admiring the way the late sun was lighting up the bright red new shoots of the rose which climbs into (and is probably killing) the mossed cottage tree. Today I saw that the whole lot had been sheared off. It didn't take any detective skills to know that a deer has been in the garden. Rats. Yesterday's rose opened out like this.

More oh dear. I finished the pair to the socks that have been about a year in the making and have unaccountably made the second one longer than the first. Duh!

I finished Case Histories and then thought yes, very good but if you want to read a gripping mystery story it's not as good as Robert Goddard. Oh dear.

I wish I knew its name. Any suggestions?
