I tell a lie; I don't know how to do polls.

Your friend's daughter is expecting a baby and you have promised to knit or crochet something for the newborn because the friend can't knit.

You are the daughter. Do you think
a) Hand knitting! Gross and old fashioned I'm never putting my baby in that.
b) Hand knitting! How lovely and thoughtful.

Should I make
a) a blanket
b) kookie hat and shoes
c) traditional matinée jacket
d) polar bear suit with ears

Thank you! I'll try that next time.

Of course, you missed out factor 3: what the baby might think of being put in wool.

What does it know, it's only twelve (weeks).
Not all yarn is wool.

Well, I say b to Qu. 1 of course.
Qu. 2 is harder because it depends on when the baby is due. Not much point in a first size polar bear suit for a summer baby. I don't think matinee coats are worn much now but it could be time for a revival. I'd go for a or b depending on the time available, I think.

Thank you. I need to make it by Easter when I see friend. It will be a summer baby so I was thinking of knitting something second sized.

A traditional matinée jacket or cardigan but in a lovely bright colour. I've made several in Debbie Bliss Baby Cashmerino, which is gorgeous yarn in gorgeous colours, and they've all been worn and worn :-)

These were a couple I made last year ...

Temptress! Seriously, they are lovely: classics with a modern twist. Could be the answer.

Would you like me to send you the pattern book to borrow? I could probably spare some yarn as well :-)

Ooh, yes please! I was going to PS where you got the pattern from. I'd be happy to photocopy and send it back. I think our wool shop does Baby Cashmerino, so I could probably get it there.

No problem at all. You are welcome to keep it for as long as you need.

Address please?! I'll put it in the post tomorrow :-)

B, and either a funkily-coloured matinee jacket or D. Small Hare is too big for me put him in anything with ears, sadly : )

Seems to be a consensus here. I could probably manage b & d as tiny garments take so little yarn.
Those hats with ears *are* cute. Never mind, with that hair, Master H looks cute in anything!

You could put the cats in it!

Or not, if you wanted to keep all your limbs.

I have contemplated knitting socks for the cats.

A polar bear suit is always good. Sirdar has one to go with its Snuggly Snowflake Chunky (a rebranding of the old Snowflake alongside the Snuggly baby yarns) and Bergere de France has a nice one in the new Tricot Baby book, although the BdF yarn is quite substantial and would be best worn outdoors.

I can recommend the Sublime pattern books for designs that are modern yet classic - they use things like moss stitch rather than traditional lacy stitches, and the colours are less sugary than those of a lot of baby yarns.

The Sirdar Snowflake pattern is the very one I happen to have; it was in Simply Knitting.

Thanks for the tip on Sublime. I was mentally looking rather hard at you when I posed the questions! :-)

I'm planning to make the Little Pixie Coat from the Second Little Sublime Handknit Book. It's a cute little moss-stitch jacket with a pointy hood.

Definitely b, and I'd love those gorgeous matinee coats if I were new mum. Donna

Hello! I think my mind's made up for me.

Loved The Risk of Darkness, thank you! I see the publication of the next one is delayed.
