Baby knitting poll

I tell a lie; I don't know how to do polls.

Your friend's daughter is expecting a baby and you have promised to knit or crochet something for the newborn because the friend can't knit.

You are the daughter. Do you think
a) Hand knitting! Gross and old fashioned I'm never putting my baby in that.
b) Hand knitting! How lovely and thoughtful.

Well, I say b to Qu. 1 of course.
Qu. 2 is harder because it depends on when the baby is due. Not much point in a first size polar bear suit for a summer baby. I don't think matinee coats are worn much now but it could be time for a revival. I'd go for a or b depending on the time available, I think.

A traditional matinée jacket or cardigan but in a lovely bright colour. I've made several in Debbie Bliss Baby Cashmerino, which is gorgeous yarn in gorgeous colours, and they've all been worn and worn :-)

Ooh, yes please! I was going to PS where you got the pattern from. I'd be happy to photocopy and send it back. I think our wool shop does Baby Cashmerino, so I could probably get it there.

Seems to be a consensus here. I could probably manage b & d as tiny garments take so little yarn.

A polar bear suit is always good. Sirdar has one to go with its Snuggly Snowflake Chunky (a rebranding of the old Snowflake alongside the Snuggly baby yarns) and Bergere de France has a nice one in the new Tricot Baby book, although the BdF yarn is quite substantial and would be best worn outdoors.

I can recommend the Sublime pattern books for designs that are modern yet classic - they use things like moss stitch rather than traditional lacy stitches, and the colours are less sugary than those of a lot of baby yarns.
