I'm currently knitting some pretty tough looking socks with reinforced heels and toes. Can't wait to start on the pink lacy ones. Has anyone actually seen/used a copy of this book?

English or American? Would it be the slightest use to a person who already has a hoard of vintage 1930s/40s/50s patterns?

I think there was some discussion about this on [livejournal.com profile] brit_knits last week. The people I know who have the book speak highly of it, at any rate.

I found the relevant post plus, oh dear, a whole lot more recommended books. Of course I got sidetracked into reading other stuff. I am relieved to find I am not the only one who buys yarn
from charity shops and car boot sales. I'd love to buy more good yarn but it's just too expensive. I like Wendy's stash busting rules.

I'm very dull when it comes to socks - the plainer the better for me. Short row heels, plain toes grafted at the end, and stocking stitch all the way.... I use them as completely mindless knitting, I couldn't be bothered to do patterns so small. And I'm not mad on the idea of wearing lacy socks anyway, they remind me of my primary school days.

But I do like to use lovely yarn - sometimes I think that the complicated patterns people use spoil the yarn, and vice versa.

Your socks always look lovely. I'll see how I get on with the lacy ones. No bad memories for me as we wore knee length fawn socks pretty well permanently. You do need something you can pick up at any time and do a bit without worrying about mistakes.

I have it but goodness will I need to concentrate when I get round to using it.Lovely patterns though. I just always seem to revert to my bog standard 60 stitches ankle down, easy heel, kitchener toes, then at least I can watch TV at the same time.

Oh dear, your socks sound just like mine. I've seen some lovely ones on Knitty but as you say, you'd have to concentrate. I can't see me ever getting my head round knitting them on circular needles or working them toe up.

You must try circular needles, they make it all soooo easy. I tend to do the rib and heel on dpns, and swap to 30cm circs for the rest and it's bliss.

Yes, so I'm told. I'm just a stick in the mud.
