I was actually outside to plant potatoes and sow broad beans, as the weather is fairly clement. Here's
Choisya ternata, the #1, totally reliable evergreen shrub for clay soil. It flowers again in the autumn.
This skimmia is a choice variety I've forgotten the name of. It's grown rather large and is smothered with flowers but the leaves have never looked happy. I think it would prefer a more acid soil.
