‘This is a book of open arguments for nerds, geeks and boffins throughout the land.’ (Publishers)
‘This is a book a lot of people will be given for Christmas.’ (Me)

This book could provoke as many arguments as Monopoly or Scrabble. Picture the scene.
Self appointed QM: ‘OK. Worst Beatles Songs.’ (Reads list.)
Cries of, ‘What?’ ‘Noooo!’ ‘ What about Hello, Goodbye? That’s terrible!’
Wait until they get to ‘Most overrated 1960s bands’ or ‘Douglas Adams quotes’. Fights could break out. Not all the lists are book or music related. Some are quite educational, e.g. ‘Best Prime Ministers we never had’. (Younger generation: ‘Who’s Denis Healey?’) Check your grammar with ‘Tautologies’ and ‘Tautologous abbreviations’. Condemn ‘Journalese’. Which are Britain’s most beautiful railway journeys?

Listellany has been compiled from John Rentoul’s columns in The Independent, with the help of his pedantic followers on Twitter. As you can tell, I found it very entertaining and recommend it as a bit of fun for someone’s Christmas stocking.

Thanks to Elliott and Thompson for sending me the book and giving me a laugh.

This comes via [livejournal.com profile] sloopjonb. Must be American? Lots of these I've never 'eard of.
What we have here is the top 106 books most often marked as "unread" by LibraryThing’s users. As in, they sit on the shelf to make you look smart or well-rounded. Bold the ones you've read, underline the ones you read for school, italicize the ones you started but didn't finish. Here's mine )

‘a favourite author for each letter of the alphabet, and the accompanying novel’
This list is the wheeze of Stuck In A Book and Ow! It’s really hard to do. A lot of my favourite authors have names beginning with ‘A’. I found the best thing was to do it quickly and instinctively, without agonizing. Here's my list )

From Scott Pack's blog came this link to the top 10 books in which things end badly. I've only read half these and started my own list which I'll add to when I think of some more. Mine are not necessarily top books, though some are.

1984, George Orwell
A Handful of Dust, Evelyn Waugh
Requiem for a Wren, Nevil Shute
Konigsmark, A E W Mason
Jude the Obscure, Thomas Hardy
The Mill on the Floss, George Eliot
