The lessons of history
Aug. 16th, 2021 09:25 amOne of many is: you cannot win a war in Afghanistan. This is from Kipling’s poem The Young British Soldier, published in 1890.
When you're wounded and left on Afghanistan's plains,
And the women come out to cut up what remains,
Jest roll to your rifle and blow out your brains
An' go to your Gawd like a soldier.
Go, go, go like a soldier,
Go, go, go like a soldier,
Go, go, go like a soldier,
So-oldier of the Queen!
The headline in today’s Daily Mail (seen online) is: ‘What the hell did they all die for?’ over a picture of British soldiers carrying a coffin draped in the union flag. Good question and the answer is, because politicians ignore the lessons of history.
