Rowan Williams seems to have finally gone off his rocker. I've always found it hard to take seriously a man who a) obviously has his wife cut his hair and b) is a druid . Now, his suggestion that the introduction of 'elements' of Sharia law to this country's legal system is 'inevitable' leads me to think he is unfit for his office. This is the first time I have felt sorry for Gordon Brown.

Ah, if only America were still a great open space where groups of people dissatisfied with the laws of their country could go and set up their own colonies in order, as Garrison Keillor put it about his own ancestors, 'to enjoy less freedom than they had at home'. But this is the real world and, Beardie, the rest of us have to live here in the UK, struggling to get along together but managing as long as there is one law for all.

For a reasoned legal argument about this, see the excellent post by [livejournal.com profile] legionseagle.

If Sharia law is introduced here I would consider emigration I am not prepared to live under it in any shape or form. If it is inevitabel in the UK (I believe it is not) I will go and live in Canada or New Zealand and I'd be taking my whole family with me.

That was my instant reaction, too. They've had discussions on the subject in Canada.

I see the BBC article has changed the quote which yesterday simply said "there's one law for everybody...I think that's a bit of a danger" to give the full, less-insane-sounding text.

He's still bonkers though.

First thing this morning, it wasn't even the lead story which was, for goodness sake, the US elections! Public reaction has obviously influenced editorial decisions.

His bonkersness lies in not seeing what such remarks would lead to. Ivory towers come to mind.

Well, of course, if Muslims wiah to settle a dispute among themselves by seeking arbitration before a Sharia court they can already do so, and indeed do. Jews, similarly, can and do seek judgements before Beth Din courts. But this is nothing to do with the law of the land, and no such court can hand down a judgment contrary to civil law, and nor should it.

Rowan the Daft is either trying to create religious solidarity (maybe he wants to form a Religious Popular Front against teh ebil atheists) or he's trying to sneak Canon Law back in via the back door, and cop a plea of Benefit of Clergy.

Incidentally, my wife cuts my hair, and does a damn good job of it. Strangely, she will not let me do hers.

Your education is showing:-)

Sorry about the hair comment. I'm sure C. doesn't use a pudding bowl, as
Mrs W seems to. Perhaps he wears it like that as a penance or, more likely, doesn't notice it.

If Mrs Cantuar uses a pudding bowl, I don't want to eat any of her pudddings.

Having now read a transcript of the twit's speech, I've no idea what he was actually trying to say. It was rambling and incoherent, delivered by Confused of Canterbury.

I always find this. I read what he's said, then think, 'Woss 'e on about?' Basic communication skills would seem to be a prerequisite in an alleged leader.
