I need space and money so I have made a start by going through our record collection. Listening to some of this old music I find that my top musical era is about 1964 – 65. The Animals, The Yardbirds, The Small Faces: good old R & B before the druggy stuff started and all that dreary underground music. No wonder I got so excited about Punk when it came along. Luckily for moi, the current market seems to favour all the progressive bands whose records I never want to hear again, so no regrets.

When it comes to Should It Stay or Should It Go I’m finding that the records I really can’t bear to part with are the ones from my pre-teen years: Adam Faith of course, and Helen Shapiro, even Cliff, although I never liked him at the time because you were either for Cliff or for Adam and many hot arguments raged on the subject over the school dinner table.

I’m also concluding that for this old music you absolutely can’t beat vinyl. I’ve been testing out the records which are worth selling on an Achiphon record player. I remember cybersofa staggering up the hill from the market with this one day. He paid £25.00 for it: bargain! Playing old records on this is like having a first edition book in a dustwrapper rather than a later paperback reprint: you get the period feel and are closer to the performer/author.

There's *still* a large box of vinyl singles of Ray's in the loft, from the 1970s - I did get round to selling a few a while ago, but haven't managed to face them since. I stuck the majority of his huge cd and video collection of Amazon, where it sold well - I just snuck in with the the videos before dvds completely took over, I think.

There's also a box of 1980s singles of mine up there, and somewhere there are lots of LPs, possibly in the spare room. But the longer I keep them, the more collectable they become. Hopefully.

It takes a huge amount of time and effort, especially as I'm scrupulously checking the records for damage. Most of the ones I don't want I'll offer to a dealer as a job lot but some are worth listing. There could be gold in your attic!

I'm hoping to put CDs on Amazon as it's so much easier. Some of the things are so rare that they aren't listed, so it will have to be eBay for them.

I've got boxes of all sorts of stuff that I probably could sell on ebay, but somehow when it comes down to it, it's nearly always easier to just list some books, largely because I can pretty much do that in my sleep. And they're easy to post.

I did get as far as ironing and photographing a load of clothes the weekend before last, so they may make it into turbolister sometime soon. Or at least soonish.

I never feel sentimental about cds in the way I do about vinyl. We still have all ours and when we are feeling particularly cash strapped I have considered selling some - I have quite a few punk singles from the 1970s which I think are worth a fair bit.

My Dad sold a lot of his 50s and 60s stuff in the 70s and made a bit on them, but nothing like the sums they would go for now, which makes him wince a bit sometimes.

I hope the FZs are staying.

You do stay attached to vinyl. The FZ collection takes up two cupboards. I'll keep anything I actually like (mostly early stuff) or feel sentimental about but the rest is going, I'm afraid. So much of it is reissues, remixes, live performances; collector's stuff, really, and useless to me.

Could I pick through FZ before they go?

When I bought the complete works of Paul Simon as a CD box set, my then boyfriend asked if I would now be getting rid of the vinyl versions. "You must be kidding!" I replied, horrified. "They've got gatefold sleeves!"

There really is no substitute for vinyl.

That's right and there are lots of young collectors, so it's not just nostalgia.

I had an all-in-one portable in high school and then Tom and I bought what was called then a 'system' - an amp and turntable, speakers; just the coolest in equipment. :<) I remember we had to walk a long way in the city of Boston to find a Pioneer equipment store. Isn't that incredible. I guess it was pretty much just the beginning of all that stuff. Who is 'cybersofa' -
Nan

We used to have some serious equipment, including massive Wharfedale speakers!
