Not to mention a physical illness graners sympathy and if you are depressed you are likely to be told by some well meaning soul to pull yourself together.

The brief episode of clinical anxiety I had was far more debilitating than the arthritis I live with all the time but which do you think garners the sympather, understanding and allowances.

So true. 'What have you got to be depressed about?' is typical of some people's reaction. As you say, it is debilitating and disabling.
