I so enjoyed Craig Brown's 1966 And All That. I wonder how much history you have to know to appreciate it? The only joke cybersofa didn't get was the one about Lord Halifax.

I particularly liked the extracts from Virginia Woolf's Diaries. A timely reminder that this is the book I most want to read at the moment.

I really enjoyed it. What surprised me most was that my husband, who says he hates history and has no liking for it, found it funny too. That said, he probably classes 20th century history as politics...
