BBC Beatles

I’m very grumpy with the BBC today after finding that two of my favourite programmes, Only Connect and University Challenge, have been banished from this evening’s TV schedule in favour of athletics. They really couldn’t care less about their viewers, it seems to me. On the other hand, they do give us some treats. Over the weekend, I caught just some of Radio 2 Beatles, a pop-up radio station celebrating fifty years since the Abbey Road album came out. The only programme I heard almost all the way through was the BBC Top 60 Digital Chart, which you can find here. Nice to see George Harrison at #1.

What a back catalogue! And that’s only sixty out of many more. Anyone knows what a huge Bob Dylan fan I am but Bob has been writing songs for about sixty years and the Beatles were only together for a short time. It really was an astonishing creative outburst. I’m an unashamed lover of early Beatles over later, no matter how innovative and good the songs are. Since this chart is based on digital downloads, it’s naturally biased. Some of my favourites are missing, like You Won’t See Me. What faves would you add to the list?

Of course I'm loving the athletics and I'm pleased the BBC care enough about me and other sport lovers and are covering it ;) The problem always is that whichever channel they put these events on someone will be upset that their favourite program has been temporarily postponed or cancelled. I feel the same about football disrupting my viewing pleasure. As they say, you can't please all of the people all of the time. Glad there were some treats for you, though.

The Beatles list is interesting. There's not many in the top ten that I'd have in my top ten. I love the earliest of the albums. I was at a very impressionable age when they came out :) Please Mr Postman, Roll Over Beethoven, I Should Have Known Better, It Won't be Long, You're Going To Lose That Girl, Tell Me Why, Misery and No Reply would be added to my list.

That wouldn't have been my top ten, either and I love everything you've picked. Perhaps it's a generational thing :-)

Rain? Plenty, although not today (yet). I was really annoyed that a day's tree work to be done on Saturday was cancelled for the second time because of the weather forecast. Sod's law says that Saturday was the best day of the week!

Typical of the weather to not play ball. Our gardener did, however, manage to cut all the hedges in between showers last week. He did an excellent job so the garden and my patio is tidy for winter. Hope you get your tree work done soon.
