In the Garden: Lychnis

When I grew these plants of Lychnis coronaria ‘Alba’ from my own saved seed, I didn’t imagine they’d become the centrepiece of the garden. They glow in the gloomy weather and are rather splendid.

It’s really hard to photograph white flowers, even in the rain, so apologies for the pic.

It is a lovely plant and good size, I could do with something like this. I like white or silver plants, there is something almost ethereal about them in the dusk.

I think it's three plants; I didn't expect them to grow so big.

The foliage is quite soft and furry.

They are lovely. I had the pinkish ones, but I don't think I've ever grown the white ones.

I bought the original plant at a church fair. The seeds come up like cress.

In my old garden I had the magenta, the white and a lovely white one with a pink eye. Nice plants but not long lived.

We had the pink where we lived before they would insist on coming up in the middle of a grassy bit under some shrubs,

I enjoyed Rachel Hore's book A week in Paris but have just read her latest and thought it a bit weak. I think I'm put off Butterfly Summer!

Pity we can't choose where plants will seed themselves.

I will mark your words about the latest from Rachel Hore; I have enjoyed most of her books. There are good things about The Butterfly Summer. I suppose it wasn't what I was expecting from the author.
