All last summer, a fox made himself so at home here that I would see him sunbathing on the grass. I'd stare at him and he would stare right back. In the autumn I saw him limping around on three legs and wondered how he would feed himself. Later, I saw the poor thing thin, grey, mangy-looking, and assumed he was a goner. Today, to my amazement, I saw him again. Still getting about on three legs but much sleeker and redder-looking than before. How they do that?

It's quite spring-like here today: sunshine at last and some warmth in it. I even cut the old leaves off those epimediums. Lathyrus vernus plants are next for the chop, before I'm cutting into green by mistake.

Maybe it was actually his son, and a whole family of cubs is growing up thinking tripod mode is the proper way to get about?

It's a thought... It's well known that dogs adjust to three legs but they have someone putting down a nice bowl of Chum for them. It's the feeding I find surprising.

Foxes can survive quite well on a diet of small insects, worms, and the like. Not to mention any dead stuff they happen to come across. The most likely explanation, however, is that someone is feeding him (possibly not intentionally ... somewhere a hedgehog is being done out of his dinner).

They will certainly eat carrion but I didn't realise they ate insects and worms.

I wouldn't put out food for hedgehogs. I want them to eat the slugs.
