The first card I’ve received with this slogan on the envelope.

News to me! But not to the Huffington Post. If you follow the link to A Christmas Dinner, you find the interesting blog Reading Dickens. Beware annoying ads.
So far this year, I’ve read one chapter.

Goodness, he's not economical with words. He makes Christmas sounds wonderful, goodwill to all men and all that :)

Where were the annoying ads?

I bet Dickens never shopped for or cooked a Christmas dinner in his life, she sa bitterly.

Ads were popping up when I landed on that page. I then got a lot of ridiculous questions from Google on the lines of, 'why don't you like this ad?' Bah!

Sounds like you need adblock or adblock plus. You can get it for free as an add on.

I quick look at the 1841 census and he was 29 and married so I expect the wife cooked as there were no live in servants. On the 1851 census he was a visitor with a load of other people at the house of a doctor so I don't know his normal home situation although his wife had died the year earlier. The 1861 census shows that he had three servants, one undoubtedly a cook :)
