Too good looking?

Just a little round up as I haven’t been posting. Sorry there’s been no May books yet; I’ll get round to it sometime. There’s a Test Match on.

What did people think of Case Histories on TV last night? I’ve read and loved all the books yet even I was a little confused by what was going on. I felt it lost the atmosphere Kate Atkinson creates so brilliantly but OTOH I had to give up my tricky knitting for my easy sock so I could watch properly and an hour whizzed by.

I’m reading and not wanting to finish Caddy’s World by Hilary McKay. This is billed as a prequel to Saffy’s Angel and is about Casson family life around the time of Rose’s birth. Gripe 1: why couldn’t the publishers make this book uniform with the rest of the series? Gripe 2: I pre-ordered it, so I should have got it as soon as it was available, but it isn’t even a first edition. Huh?

Garden news is good because it’s raining now, rained yesterday afternoon and rained the night before. For a garden which has only had a day’s drizzle in about three months this is refreshing. Plus, smug chops here had done some planting and hoeing at what turned out to be just the right time. Why do people talk of a ‘June gap’? The garden’s full of flowers.

An email from AbeBooks today about Feel Good reads. We could all do with some of those but what do you think of their choices? By what possible standard could you call A Town Like Alice feel-good? It’s so sad! If Bridget Jones’ Diary weren’t already a favourite read of mine, I would have been put off forever by the horrible cover shown on that page.

I thought he looked like Robson Green from the side.
Both John and I thought that we had seen it before,or something very much like it.
Luckily my knitting, last night, was a garter stitch square.

God's game is more important than most things ;)

No, not too good looking. He has fab eyes, rather dangerous looking I think :) I have Case Histories recorded so I haven't seen it yet.

I heard it raining in the night and it looks like we've had plenty, hurrah!

Ha ha! From what I hear of the London weather today it may be a case of rain stopped play.

Glad I didn't put in any spoilers.

I'm glad I had read the book, otherwise I'd have been very confused. The book confused me too, by the way, but in the end it all came together.

I saw a preview on the BBC which had Bill Nighy in it and I thought "Huh!? But he is *nothing* like Jackson Brodie!" It must have been one of those "new drama on the BBC" previews where they show clips from several series, though. Much as I love Bill Nighy, Jason Isaacs fits the part much better. I'm looking forward to tonight's episode.

*is wondering what Bill Nighy will appear in*

Yes, those trailers that don't tell you when you *can* next see Bill Nighy on screen! He's too old for JB.

I've only read five of her choices, but apart from Cold Comfort Farm I hated them all!

Have you tried Thin Blue Smoke? I really liked it. I was lucky enough to win a review copy but I saw a paperback in my local library so it's easy to get. I'm glad it's been a success.

I had forgotten about Thin Blue Smoke, but rereading your post on it I think I might like it. And my library has it too, so I'll put it on my list.

I enjoyed the TV programmes, although the books are better. You can't get all the author's funny wee remarks, nor can you really see how much Jackson worries about his daughter and wants to protect her from EVERYTHING (I so identified with that!) No complaints about Jason Isaacs at all, though!

Yes, some detective stories are dull to read but make good television. I do think in this case the books are much better. I also think they're making Jackson too much of a psychic super-hero. I still enjoy it.
