Garden News
Apr. 10th, 2011 09:40 amChaenomeles speciosa or Flowering Quince. I think this one is ‘Geisha Girl’. It’s a huge shrub here and very pretty just at the moment. I took the photo yesterday afternoon when I got back from the Spring Flower Show. Oh dear. Entries and attendance were both down and I felt bad about not entering anything. I could fully have won the class for Primroses and I’m sure my patterned socks would have beaten the only other knitted entry.
I see from Jane Brocket’s blog that she’s already picking large bunches of tulips from her garden. So far I have one in flower.
Tulip 'Cairo', gorgeous. Looks like another good gardening day so I must gee myself up to do some. I hate to say it but down here in the south we could really do with some rain.

I felt just the same when we entered our flower and produce show in the autumn; there were many categories where we could (and did) walk away with the prizes, as well as the ones where the professional growers seemed to have it all sown up. I felt bad for all the years we hadn't entered (although usually for good reasons like being away). It is a wonderful institution.

Date: 2011-04-10 08:57 am (UTC)I used to be a real busy bee in the hort.soc. but events got in the way and I haven't really got back into it. It is wonderful as you say, because you get all sorts of people involved; it's totally classless.
