Carbonel by Barbara Sleigh. Illustrated by V H Drummond. Puffin Story Book 155. First published 1955, first Puffin edition 1961. I’m not posting these covers in any particular order, just taking each book from the shelf as it comes.
Just checked and it seems to be out of print but plenty of second hand copies available. You can also get it for the Kindle. For a while the sequels made outrageous prices on eBay but they seem to be cheaper now.
This is the first book I can remember being able to read myself, which is one of the reasons I'm so fond of it. The other being that it's a lovely story. And yes, does still seem to be in print.
