Usually on this day I think of my grandfathers, father and uncles, all of whom fought in world wars and survived. Also of my husband’s uncle, killed aged nineteen in the second world war. Sadly, there are other wars.

Twice this year our small town has resembled Wootton Bassett: shops closed, sombre crowds lining the streets as a funeral cortège passed by to the Minster. On each occasion a young soldier, raised in Dorset, killed far away in Afghanistan, was being given a full military funeral. Sad video here.

And, BTW, in my opinion today is the day for wearing a poppy, not when you are taking part in Strictly Come Dancing. I’m with Jon Snow on this one.
