But compare this

which I am lucky enough to have a copy of, with this new paperback edition.

Gross, or what?

The new editions are truly vile. They've done similar things to St Clare's, and to the Mystery of series. I like to go to Waterstones or Borders with like-minded friends and giggle over them.

I shudder to think what would have happened to the Chalet books if GGB hadn't bought the rights....

Now there's a thought! The Chalet School as chicklet lit fiction with pink sparkly covers. Come to think of it, there *is* some sex and romance in the CS series but none at all in Malory Towers. Hmm. Joey flirting with Roger...Len & Reg...

I just wonder what happens when the child who's bought the EB with the expection that they're getting another sparkly chicklet book thinks when they open it up and find the girls in gymslips and breaking bounds to visit the circus...

That is truly awful.

I think the reason I struggle to buy new fiction these days is because I am so put off by all the identikit chicklitty covers. Pah!

It's a shame because I enjoy The Princess Diaries, which have rather silly covers and I lurve Hilary McKay, whose books are also given the chicklit look.

I don't mind the chicklitty look of things like Hilary MacKay too much although I think it does disguise how brilliant the books are. I really can't bear things like Jane Austen being given an updated image. And the original Malory Towers covers are so beautiful in their way while the updated ones aren't even attractive by today's standards.

Yes, definitely gross, and rather sad, too.

Sad, yes, gives a completely false idea of what the books are like. They've never been out of print but at least the earlier updates showed the girls as schoolgirls.

Hello there ! Not sure how I found myself here but had to comment as I was having the same discussion on a friend's journal about the evil that has becometh Enid Blyton cover design ! I'm not opposed to modernisation (lots of my covers are the 70's era/tv tie in ones) but did they have to make them so fugly ?!? It's like Blyton does Bratz !

:shudders:

Yay ! Pirates A-hoy !

I suppose we have to be grateful Blyton is still in bookshops at all, you have to try hard to find them these days. :-(
