Ronald Searle is ninety today: congratulations! In celebration, you can watch a Channel 4 interview, visit an exhibition at the Cartoon Museum, gaze at the window of the Heywood Hill bookshop and of course read the books he illustrated.

What a lot we owe him.

I have only read Down with Skool (this was read to us as a treat on a Friday afternoon in my small private primary school - it certainly wouldn't feature on any National Curriculum today! - and I have always loved it. I even end up saying "chiz, chiz, chiz" to some correspondents who also adore Molesworth.

PS Didn't Kaye Webb edit Young Elizabethan magazine? I loved that, too, and Molesworth was also in that.

I've read the lot and have many favourite passages.
Molesworth was in Elizabethan, before my time. Kaye Webb was editor of Puffin books, not the magazine.
