It must be exciting seeing what appears in your new garden. Mine is very dry, more like August than June, but nothing died while I was in Spain fortunately.
My English teacher, an age ago, was always talking about Angela Thirkell. Must try her.

I can't remember how I first discovered Angela Thirkell but I do love her books.
