Oh, the wonderfulness of Paul Simon. Ken Bruce (whom I've now switched off) played The Boxer sung by Simon & Garfunkel. I found myself singing along, note and word perfect and transported to a better place (Brighton 1969, actually). No doubt this was amusing for the builders downstairs. Query for Paul Simon buffs and I'm looking hard at [livejournal.com profile] huskyteer, here. I'll swear the version just played on the radio left out the 'I'm older than I once was...After changes etc' verse. Can this be so?

Yes - Paul put that verse in later, during the solo years. It's on Live Rhymin'.

Thank you! I didn't miss it at the time, as I know the original version better, natch, just thought of it afterwards.

I always sing that verse anyway, in the conveniently provided instrumental break.

The first time I heard "The Boxer" was during a music lesson at school. I was swept off my feet.

I used to have the 45, actually I thought I still did, but I must have left it behind when I cleared my mum's house (I kept my records there, because I didn't have a record player anymore). In one of my rare ruthless decluttering moods I probably thought it was okay to leave it because having the LP was enough. Sniff.

Oh, shame. I do have the original single, also a record player but I can't plug it in at the moment so I can also sniff.

I am sorry, but he is a bad guy. He diddled Bruce Woodley out of credit and royalties for at least one song. I lost respect for him after knowing that.

Problem. That's horrible but doesn't alter the fact that he's written so many beautiful songs. Where do you stop with artists? Philip Larkin was not a nice man IMO but I can still enjoy his poetry.
