Or, how seeing this got me gardening today.

Not so long ago, Christopher Lloyd could write that hellebores were the infallible sign of a highbrow gardener. Spotting this flowering in my new garden made me realise how common they've become, available at any garden centre.

As soon as I noticed the flower I hastily dropped the shopping (priorities!), retrieved the trusty Felcos and cut off all the leaves. Then I thought I'd clear the dead fern fronds from around the other plants so they'd show up better.

And that's how I came to spend two hours today clearing the bank of rusty mounds. It looks rather bare at the moment

but it gives all the bulbs coming through some space. And being outdoors got me down with the snowdrops.

Thank you! As hellebores go, it's not a very exciting one but I was pleased to find any. All snowdrops are lovely; I don't see much point in fancy varieties but I've written about this before!
