When I left the house at eight o'clock this morning, my kitchen looked something like this.

When I returned at half past twelve, it looked like this

There was no power or water. Meanwhile, outside, Bournemouth and Wessex Water have reached my house in their mission to replace the drain along the whole road.

I was having a well-deserved sit-down when a large man with GAS on his back strolled unnanounced into my sitting room and informed me that the water chaps had cut through my gas pipe. This was not a problem, apparently and I wasn't to worry. Oh, good.

The gas is fixed, power and water back on, men gone and they've fixed me a temporary kitchen in the obstacle course which was once the dining room.

Ingenious, eh?

In better news, there are crocuses out in the garden and the afternoon was so mild and spring-like that when I strolled up the road to post a letter I didn't bother with a coat. Tomorrow, more disruption but also a new greenhouse. Today, a bath, a glass of wine. Not much reading getting done.

Poor you! Must be so tiring, but the sooner they start the sooner it'll be done, and you've chosen such lovely stuff. Glad the temp kitchen is in place!

Oh dear, you better make "it has to get worse before it gets better" your mantra! But at least you now have water, gas, and power again, so you can have that lovely warm bath and something to eat.

I'm sure it's going to look great! And hurrah for early spring days!

It does feel like spring is on the way, doesn't it? I saw aconites and lots of snowdrops when I walked the dogs this morning (first snow free walk for a fortnight. Enjoy that glass of wine.

'Borrowed days', as they call them. I'm sure worse is to come but it is a promise.

I remember those days of living out of the microwave! Hope things are all sorted out soon - enjoy your glass of wine!

Thank you. I'm wondering if I'll ever get back to real cooking! Cheers for microwaves and wine.

Looks like you're doing better than we did when we had our kitchen replaced - we ended up eating out of the microwave and toaster (both sitting on the living-room floor) for about three weeks (and this for a job that was supposed to take 5 days!). Just pray the workmen don't find anything "interesting" in the electrics.

I believe you but I am very lucky in my builders. Today's surprise: part of the kitchen wall is made of corrugated iron! There are historical reasons for this and if I get time I'll post about it, it's so interesting (for those who like house stories). Three weeks is about what I'm expecting, as they're doing two rooms at once.

Wow what a day. Still at leats you have heat, hot water and a temproray kitchen. I had to move out for a week when my kitchen was done as teh boiler was moved too. I went onm holiday and let my Dad supervise...

It will be worth it when it is done though. A nice useable klitchen is always worth the hassle.

Yes, I have a microwave, fridge, cooker and water so I shouldn't complain too much. BUT this is the third week of having the builders in and I can't see them taking less than another two. I'm longing to have the place to myself again.

*Groan* it seems to be going on forever! I'm getting cabin fever here. Still, every day there's something new. Can't wait for Saturday and no men.
