Virtually no play today at Wimbledon and the forecast looks the same for tomorrow. Like many people, I take no interest in tennis the rest of the year yet regard Wimbledon as a national institution not to be missed. I think partly it's because I've been watching it since I was eleven and there's an accumulation of summery memories that goes with the idea, 'Wimbledon'. It's also that for two weeks a small part of SW19 becomes a theatre full of drama, surprises, tensions and occasionally, as in the Ivanisevic/Rafter final, agonising suspense. So I'll keep watching.

What a lovely and apposite icon! I too like watching Wimbledon, despite finding tennis itself rather dull. I especially like the incredibly low ranked British players crashing out early on to the well-faked surprise of the commentators.

Thanks! The picture is from a Girls' Sports Annual.
Those British players! Obviously they're good but they are still struggling in the lower ranks in their twenties, whereas all the great players like Boris Becker made it in their teens. I think we shall all be sick of Andy Murray pretty soon. If the rain stops.

I knew I'd seen that illustration before, a little digging brought up this -

I'm absolutely fascinated by the way that Collins reused illustrations.

I was really looking forward to a day of tennis today, typical that it rained when I wasn't at work, it'll probably clear up on Wednesday, just as I go back. Grrr. Wimbledon is the only sport I watch, but I do like to follow it. I'm sure I miss a lot of the finer points, but I enjoy it anyway.

Yes indeed! I should have spotted that one. I have a Sunshine Press annual which has as one of its colour plates the same picture they used for the paper-covered boards of The Girls of Squirrel House.
Bad luck about work. One of my cousins, a Wimbledon fanatic, has been out of work for a month. Although of course she wanted a new job, she was miffed that it came up just last week.
