I was having a quiet cup of coffee this morning when I spotted a deer with its head in the border, chomping my plants. I rushed for the camera and the creature stared right back at me, meanwhile having a good long waz on the grass, as you can see if you click on the picture to enlarge it. They are beautiful but so destructive.

Eek! I'm glad we don't have deer here, my borders are suffering enough from neglect as it is ;) I did see a hedgepig the other night though, which pleased me.

They seem able to leap any barrier. The only way to keep them out is with an electric fence.

Hedgehogs are dear and they eat slugs!

Bob chased a hedgepig the other day ... a very stupid hedgepig, as the benighted tiggy didn't curl up, but tried to run away, and got stuck under the gate.

And did you rescue it? And did Bob pick up some fleas?

Claire rescued it. Bob is too much of a coward to get close enough to get fleas ... mind you, he gets fleas anyway!

They'll be fine in my garden then! I have slugs and snails in abundance...

And that's two people on my flist have posted pictures of deer in their garden this morning. Schpooky.

Anyway, your deer is nothing but a damned Asain immigrant!

That is spooky. I don't know why the wildlife is posing for me this morning. A bullfinch was perched on the table right outside the window but moved before I could snap it.

They come over here, eat our strawberry plants...

I daresay! I heard a young child on the radio the other day describing how he had cooked and eaten squirrel.
'What did it taste like?'
'Rabbit.'

Good Lord. I've only ever seen one gallop through in a flash. What a handsome fellow!

Beautiful!

And rotten, too (our fruit trees have no bark on their bottom halves).

They're awful, aren't they? They schloop all the leaves off roses as well as chopping off the stems. I see they've also been pruning the eryngiums and the strawberries.

Oh, it's gorgeous! The deer and the photo ...

Thank you. I didn't have much choice about how to take the photo of course, just had to point the camera through the window while the deer was standing still. It takes you out of yourself to see a wild creature like that. I just wish they didn't eat the garden.

We just had a doe walk by our garden door a few minutes ago. Even though they are destructive, I love living in a place where we can see them quite often.

That's nice. Strange how they can live their lives alongside of ours.

I don't think deer ticks and Lyme Disease are such a worry here yet are they? Years in Long Island made me think the only good dear was venison! :) Donna

There have been a few cases of Lyme disease, caused by ticks picked up in the New Forest. Someone I know got it and was quite ill in hospital for a while, poor chap. Walkers are advised to wear their trousers tucked into their socks!
