While everyone else (it seems) is discussing their projects on Ravelry, I remain loyal to LJ. I have three works in progress as usual but one of the three keeps changing. I've just made one sock of a pair of bedsocks, using oddments of Paton's Fairytale. I have a new plan for socks, to be carried out on the next one I knit. I find that when I make the heel flap, knitting backwards & forwards instead of round and round, the tension is looser. So I'm going to try using a smaller needle just for that section. Anyone else do this already? I've never seen it suggested anywhere. Socks always look better on feet than in photos.

I haven't heard of people changing their needles, but it makes sense. I find my heel tension is about the same as my round tension usually.

I have to take a pattern hope for work and knit a chunk of it. Our readers seem to be having masses of trouble with it, and our tech ed's on holiday so I'm going to give it a go myself. It appears to make sens on paper...

Testing a pattern would be a nightmare for me; good luck!

It sounds as though your purl tension is looser than your knit tension, so going down a needle size makes sense. Mine's the same whichever way I do it, and I do short row heels anyway, so I've never needed to.

I've just discovered the joys of knitting patterned socks (still not sure if I'll actually wear them, but making them is great fun) so I've been socking away like mad lately. All photos on Ravelry I'm afraid....

Yes, I think you're right about the purl tension; strange when I've been knitting for so many years.

Perhaps it would be worth joining Ravelry to be able to see your wonderful socks:-)

Thank you, they're lovely! I've been wanting to try a pattern and wondering if it's worth doing them in an already patterened yarn, but yours work well. I need some shoes which will show off my socks...

I think that fairly subtly patterned yarn works best, I've seen some people do patterns in vivid colours and it does eat the pattern a bit.

I'm coveting some Clarks shoes which will show off my socks, but they're £40 and I can't quite justify them at the moment.

You can see my finished object photos on Flickr, http://www.flickr.com/photos/10150448@N06/sets/72157600854217904/, but there are more photos and details on Ravelry - do sign up! The waiting list is only about a day now.
