I've never watched so much television in my life as recently. ITV3 is my new friend. The current rash of costume dramas I probably would have watched anyway but, what? Last night: City of Vice, or Prime Suspect set in the eighteenth century. Sunday: Lark Rise to Candleford followed by Sense and Sensibility. If anyone reading this doesn't know Flora Thompson's book, let me assure them that it is nothing like this adaptation rewriting to suit modern sensibilities and accommodate the same actors we see in everything else. As for S & S, words fail me. Completely wrong in every way with bizarre characterisations such as Miss Steele's sister apparently modelling herself on one of Doc Martin's secretaries. No wonder I spend so much time watching golden oldies.

I absolutely love Flora Thompson. I meant to reread them recently, but didn't quite manage it. I did watch Lark Rise, but I thought it was just vaguely pleasant Sunday evening telly, not an adaption at all really. One of the TV reviews of it as 'an overlong Hovis advert' rather struck a chord!

Ah, Hovis ads, famously shot in Dorset without smells. Some of those cottages must have been distinctly unsavoury. I love the books and Flora's life was very interesting. There's a biography of her by Gillian Lindsay, which you might like.
