I visited my friendly post office today with a pile of parcels and enquired about Royal Mail's ant-string edict. It was complete news to them but they kindly got on the phone to find out the truth. After being messed around for a while they got the answer: no string on any packet or parcel sent through Royal Mail. One wonders how they expect to keep customers and staff with all the changes they keep making. But we all know, as with their ludicrous stamp issuing policy, that it's profits first and customers second with them. Today I had to pack up a Girl's Own Annual, which anyone knows weighs about a ton. I put it in a recycled box and used yards of tape to make it secure. I'm going to have to charge more for postage.

Could you work around by stringing up the parcel, and then taping over the string? It might use less tape?

Brainy wheeze! I think the problem is the lumpiness affecting the sorting machinery so it would probably still doom the parcel. I'll ask and see.
