I'm reading my way through the Furrowed Middlebrow books and my absolute favourite (so far) is Elizabeth Fair. Only six books, all early post WW2, then she stopped - even though she lived until the 1990s. Like a gentler, kinder Angela Thirkell and laced with humour and sharp observation. Lovely. I also loved 'The Lark' by Edith Nesbitt - set in 1919 and great fun.
