Nature watch: rabbit

This morning, for the first time ever, I drew the curtains and saw a large rabbit in the garden. Bunnies are cute but not what a gardener wants to see. Luckily this one was just nibbling grass and I don't have any lettuce or radishes for him.

Peter Rabbit was Florence's favourite character ever! I still remember her wide eyes when we read about 'Mr McGigger's garden) :-)

Peter was 'very naughty'. Perhaps that was the attraction. All right minded children love Beatrix Potter. And their parents know the books off by heart from reading them so often!

One of my favourite memories of Florence was taking her to the Beatrix Potter experience in Bowness when she was about 18 months old. 'Mrs Winkle Winkle' and 'Froggy Dancing' were so real to her, she walked straight through into the roped-off exhibits to live with them in their world. I have rarely seen anybody so happy!

There have been noticeably fewer rabbits in my garden this year, thank goodness. They are a total pest here. My neighbours (aka brother and family) have two new cats, one of whom likes to wander through my garden, which I think has been very effective.

I find it bizarre that one has suddenly appeared. Quite a few cats prowl through my garden and they're often hunting in the meadow over the hedge, as are buzzards, so it's not exactly rabbit friendly around here.

I like to see them if I'm out and about, but *not* in my garden! He was sweet, though.
