Speak more clearly! The world of mondegreens

I have just been listening to the Radio 4 six o'clock news. I spent some time wondering why on earth or indeed, how, people would steal badgers. Then I realised the badly spoken reporter was talking about badges, as in stealing people's disability badges out of cars. Why people complain about the lovely Jamaican accent of Neil Nunes I can't imagine, because I never have the slightest difficulty understanding him.

What! You've never heard of the infamous Somerset badger-rustlers? They tempt the unsuspecting brocks out of their setts with wild honey, and then spirit them away to be the playthings of rich and dissolute Turks. It's known as the black-and-white slave trade.

I have just done a complete double take - I was at a gathering yesterday with a girl who works for defra, she was talking about necrophiliac badgers, in that they had a problem with badgers in a cemetery digging up dead bodies, we all thought that she had said necrophiliac badges, which brought a completely different picture to all our minds.....

What annoys me is driving round a car-park which is completely full apart from a row of empty 'Disabled Only' spaces!
