At the Flower Show

Our annual spring flower show today and this exhibit (from our Secretary) won best bloom in show.



The show wasn’t very well supported, I don’t know how much longer we can keep going with it. Sad.

That is an exceptionally beautiful daffodil! Yes, it is very sad that there may be an end in sight for your show -- so many lovely things seem to be falling by the wayside over here as well.

I never cease to be amazed at the skill of the growers. I expect your problem is the same as ours: older people struggling to keep things going and younger ones too busy these days.

At my primary school in Roehampton, every child was given a daffodil bulb to nurture and grow to be judged the following spring, probably at the Easter service in church. Maybe the committee could initiate such a class in the show with sponsorship in the shape of bulbs from the garden centre.

Also, I just didn't actually know about our horticultural show for ages. Maybe the committee needs a piece in the local magazine to get newcomers involved.

One year we did something similar, giving out bulbs for children to grow. This year, only two children entered the children's classes and they were the grandchildren of a member. When my daughter was little there were lots of entries and far more visitors to the show. All our meetings are mentioned in the local mag. and they always report on all the local horticultural shows. I just don't know the answer!

Oh, that is sad. Maybe you could keep trying with the bulbs for children, though. It may spark something for the future.
