TV watch: Spring Walks
Feb. 8th, 2023 11:11 amI so enjoyed Winter Walks that I kept telling people about the programme and why they should watch it. It’s a little gem, hidden away in the BBC 4 schedule and easy to miss. A fairly well-known person goes for a walk of about six miles, quite alone apart from a 360-degree camera on a stick, which allows them to film themselves talking as well as the country around them. Every now and then, a legend appears on the screen giving the exact location, height above sea level, temperature and how far the walker still has to go. There’s no voiceover and sometimes, all you can hear is birdsong. The trekker might meet a dog walker and exchange greetings; some of the meetings seem set up, which jars.
Yesterday evening I watched Spring Walks. Nina Wadia walked in Swaledale, musing on events in her life, spirituality and faith and the healing benefits of nature. I was annoyed to see this listed as 2/2, which means I managed to miss the first one and there will be no more for a while. I find it a very relaxing half-hour, real time out and the star is always the beautiful English countryside.
