What is Napoleon up to now? Imitating his great hero, Julius Caesar, he is introducing what is known as the Napoleonic Code or Civil Code: an attempt (pretty successful) to standardise the vast unwieldy mass of French laws, education, measurements etc. Religious toleration is introduced, lycées will educate those who can benefit from them (except women), rewards will be based on merit, not on birth. It is essentially patriarchal; men have complete power over their families. Napoleon thought women’s job was to have babies.
