Bookalikes
Jul. 8th, 2013 09:43 amFor a while now, Private Eye has had an occasional series on bookalikes, different books with almost identical covers. As a matter of fact, book bloggers were there first, noticing all the headless women suddenly appearing on books. Publishers have always recycled in this way. You may see the dustwrapper illustration from a book by EJO reused for a completely different title and then appear again as the cover for an annual. Browsing ebay this morning, I noticed this old Blackie book:

It reminded me strongly of this:

According to Jane Badger in Heroines on Horseback, that Children’s Press illustration is uncredited. Not the same publisher in this case, but to me a clear case of bookalike. Any more?
