callmemadam: (reading)
My latest read from Jodi Picoult. Yes, her books are formulaic. Yes, as a result of reading them I know far more about the American legal system than I need to. Nevertheless I get gripped by the story and this one is particularly agonizing. Anna was conceived as a genetic match for her sister Kate, who has a rare and inevitably fatal form of leukaemia. When Anna is thirteen, Kate develops renal failure and to the horror of her family, Anna refuses to donate a kidney and sues her parents for rights over her own body. No spoilers needed; you can get all this from the cover of the book. This a very modern theme and the author covers just about every angle of grief, conflict and ethics. Then there is a very surprising ending.
