Today is Derby Day at Epsom Downs. I love the gees, rather surprisingly, although I hardly ever get the chance to watch any racing and then only on Channel 4. The Derby has always been a people's race and to my mind it's never been the same since they switched it from Wednesday to Saturday. I remember when I was teaching in Sutton, Surrey, a very charming but rather raffish colleague slinking around the staffroom trying to persuade people to cover his afternoon's lessons so that he could slope off. Not that I approve of that, but it shows the attraction of a slightly illicit midweek event. Everything is so damned respectable nowadays.Jun. 2nd, 2007
