My friend D suggested we meet at my old stamping ground of Kingston Lacy House this afternoon and we had a very jolly time. Perfect weather, not many people about (all gone to the beach, I expect) and always something new to see in the house as they open up more rooms. No photography is allowed inside but the grounds were looking good.

Bench in the fernery

Door of the little bothy in the fernery. We felt threatened by owls and started discussing The Owl Service but disappointingly, the notice warns of danger from crumbling floorboards.

As well as her company, kind D has lent me a pile of all the books I most want to read at the moment. The luck! I can't wait to start on them.

I adore Kingston Lacy. If you would like to read more of the background to this house and it's wonderful contents then read Anne Sebba's biog. of William Bankes' entitled The Exiled Collector.

Thank you! I'll see if I can get it from the library.
